About
The Canadian General Surgery Foundation (CGSF) – formally known as the Canadian Surgery Research Fund – was founded in 1983 to fund research performed by early career general surgeons and general surgery residents in both clinical and basic science. Since its inception, the Foundation has funded many significant research projects in surgery, some of which have had interdisciplinary application, and it contributes to the Annual Research Retreat for Residents in General Surgery.

The Foundation, now in its 40th year, is expanding its focus to include projects in the areas of advocacy and education, as well as research at all career stages. A new program launched in 2023 is centered on the development of low-tech / low-cost solutions to aid rural and remote surgeons practicing in low- and middle-income centers in Canada.

Canadian general surgeons have pioneered the development and application of minimally invasive surgical techniques, cancer care, transplantation, and the management of trauma and sepsis for innovative, cost-effective, evidence-informed health care delivery. It is the mission of the Canadian General Surgery Foundation to ensure that general surgeons in Canada can continue to undertake impactful research that ultimately holds the delivery of optimal patient care at its core.
